The adoption of Electric Vehicles (EV) has been one of the most significant technological transitions ever, and it is already in an exponential phase. Twenty years since introducing the first mass-market hybrid vehicle, experts believe that 2021 will be the tipping point for EVs with plug-in hybrids or PHEVs and battery-electric cars finally attaining mainstream status, overtaking internal combustion vehicles. After all, mainstream automobile manufacturers are the ones buzzing the most about EVs. From Tesla's much-hyped Cybertruck to the electric variant of Ford's iconic Mustang, EVs are rapidly establishing themselves across the automobile industry. Moreover, with battery prices dropping over the last decade, EV manufacturing will soon become cheaper than ever, making it accessible to larger sections of society.
While pricing and charging are the two most significant roadblocks to the widespread adoption of EVs, charging remains the more daunting task of the two. To encourage customers to switch to EVs, the charging experience must be as hassle-free as filling up an internal combustion vehicle. With the cumulative number of EVs on the road expected to reach 35 million by 2030, there is an urgent need to increase charging stations. While cost remains a significant concern, local regulatory issues and electric grid updates also play an essential role. Facing regulatory and technological challenges, the EV revolution will require major collaboration among different levels of government.
Catering to these needs and leading the charge in creating the world's largest and most open EV charging network is ChargePoint (NYSE: CHPT), a company focused solely on building the best electric vehicle (EV) charging experience for everyone involved in the shift to electric. For more than a decade, ChargePoint has been building the fueling network of the future. The company provides access to hundreds of thousands of places to charge, usable with one single account. From passenger cars to delivery vehicles to buses and more, ChargePoint offers the solution to charge any EV, anywhere it goes. The company has also built a fully integrated portfolio of hardware, cloud services, and support with the best technology in the industry.
A COMPREHENSIVE GLOBAL ELECTRIC FLEET CHARGING PORTFOLIO
In June 2021, ChargePoint announced the most comprehensive EV charging solution portfolio available for fleets of all types and sizes. From concept to scale, the company's global fleet solution portfolio includes everything fleets need to electrify and optimize fueling as they grow.
"ChargePoint is making the transition to electrification a seamless experience, with a fleet portfolio that combines world-class software-defined hardware with services and support features to satisfy the operational needs of all types of fleets," says Bill Loewenthal, Senior Vice President, Product, ChargePoint.
The ChargePoint Express Plus, a scalable DC fast charging platform based on a software-defined DC hardware architecture, minimizes power conversion equipment costs needed per site. Its modular design enables compliance with stringent uptime requirements. The company's holistic approach optimizes the fuel cost per vehicle and is designed to meet the needs of fleet operators now and in the future. "Successful fleet electrification requires optimizing, adapting, and scaling to all of the unique needs that fleets have — from planning to implementation — and we offer the most complete portfolio for the market," adds Loewenthal.
ANDROID AUTO INTEGRATION FOR ENHANCED EV EXPERIENCE
To make the transition to electric mobility easier and seamless for drivers, ChargePoint recently entered into a collaboration with Android Auto. This new integration brings essential EV charging functionality inside the vehicle, allowing drivers to access charging information directly from their infotainment system. In addition, Android users will now be able to harness the power of the ChargePoint app on their vehicle display by simply connecting an Android phone with the ChargePoint app installed and running Android 6.0 or above to an Android Auto compatible vehicle.
"By integrating essential charging data directly into the vehicle's infotainment system, drivers are even more empowered and informed. With the ability to connect their phone directly to their EV through Android Auto, drivers now have access to ChargePoint app information right on the vehicle display," notes Loewenthal. Some of the application's key features include a map with nearby stations, the ability to check station status, beginning a charging session, and filtering nearby stations based on charging speed, availability, and cost. "The enhanced connection between app and vehicle represents the next step in how drivers and passengers are fueling mobility and how ChargePoint is delivering technology solutions to fit the needs of EV drivers now and in the future," says Loewenthal.
ACCELERATING THE TRANSITION TO EVS
Earlier in April, ChargePoint and LeasePlan USA, a global leader in fleet management and driver mobility services, announced an agreement to enable the accelerated transition to EVs across company fleets. Through this partnership, the two companies will develop software, networked EV charging hardware, and services with end-to-end support from installation to deployment and management for LeasePlan clients to help make the transition to electric more seamless. LeasePlan is set to work with ChargePoint to provide their clients across the U.S. with solutions to electrify their company car fleets, allowing access to a comprehensive software portfolio, networked hardware solutions, and services to enable fully-managed EV charging at home and work.
With at-home charging of prime importance to LeasePlan clients, ChargePoint's cloud subscription solution provides the tools to manage and track pricing, energy usage, and more. In addition to home charging services, LeasePlan clients will have access to most of ChargePoint's more than 110,000 activated places to charge on its network with additional access to thousands of public areas to charge across North America through roaming agreements with other EV charging networks.
Focused on offering the best EV charging experience for everyone involved in the shift to electric mobility, ChargePoint has delivered over 92 million charges. For ChargePoint, EV charging isn't just a business; it is a passion. The entire ChargePoint leadership drives electric vehicles. As the leader in EV charging network, ChargePoint is all in on electric mobility to build a brighter future for everyone.
